What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a weighted average of your grade points across all courses you have studied, where each course is weighted by its credit units (also called credit hours or credit loads).
Nigerian universities typically use either a 5.0-point scale or a 4.0-point scale. Most federal universities follow the National Universities Commission (NUC) standard - the 5.0 scale.
The Standard Nigerian Grade Scale (5.0 System)

The CGPA Formula
Quality Point = Grade Point × Credit Units
GPA (per semester) = Σ(Quality Points) ÷ Σ(Credit Units)
CGPA (cumulative) = Σ(All Quality Points to date) ÷ Σ(All Credit Units to date)
Worked Example - Year 1
Suppose a 100-level student takes these courses in Semester 1:

Tips for Improving or Protecting Your CGPA
- Focus on high-credit-unit courses: A 3-unit course has 3× the weight of a 1-unit course on your CGPA. Prioritise them.
- Avoid F grades at all costs: An F (0.0 GP) on a 3-unit course pulls your CGPA down significantly and may require a carryover repeat.
